While growing up, I used to think that the Anti-Defamation League was an organization that did good stuff. Only more recently did I realize that though the ADL does do important work fighting right-wing hate groups, most of its efforts are spent advocating for Israel - and they have a very militant, Israel-right-or-wrong view.
Several years ago, it was exposed that the ADL was actively spying on Palestinian, Arab, and anti-apartheid (in South Africa) activists. They kept files on 10,000 individuals and 600 organizations.
In his recent letter to ADL Chairman Abe Foxman, Ralph Nader correctly states that
Few groups get the free ride that has been the case of the ADL when it ventures beyond its historic mission into covering the Israeli militaristic regime and its brutalization and slaughter of far more innocent Palestinians it occupies, than the reverse casualties inflicted on innocent Israelis.
It is time to call out organizations such as the ADL and AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) for what they really are - not non-profits - but agents of a foreign government.
