Injustice Reigns in Benton Harbor

Here is the situation in Benton Harbor, Michigan, today:

Benton  Harbor is 97% Black; 70% of residents are without paid employment.  The city is across the river from  St. Joseph's that is 99% white, with less than 10% unemployment.  Average income in Benton Harbor is  $8,000 and $41,000 in St. Joseph.

Per  capita, more people from Benton Harbor are in prison than any other place  in the US.

Through all this, Benton Harbor has resisted.  Lorenzo Komboa Ervin and others formed the Black Autonomy Network Community Organization (BANCO) to fight against racism and corruption.  In 2003, the community rebelled for two days against police brutality and terror.

This past February, BANCO organized a recall election that successfully removed a corrupt city official from office.  Threatened by this achievement and the level of community organizing, authorities have falsely charged BANCO board member and community leader Rev. Edward Pinckney with voter fraud.  He's facing four felonies and massive legal bills.

Benton Harbor is asking for support against this attempt to squash and threaten the grassroots movement.  Click on the link below for specific instructions and spread the word!  (So far the only blog I've seen that's mentioned Benton Harbor is this- and that's just sad.)

Take a few minutes to support Benton Harbor - A simple act could make a big difference! Send a postcard or letter to: The Attorney Grievance Commission, 243 W. Congress, Detroit, MI 48226. Request a complete investigation into the activities of Berrien County prosecutor James Cherry during and in relation to the recall election trial, April 12, 13, 14, 2005. Atty. Cherry fabricated evidence. Rev. Pinkney has mailed materials to the Commission.

Send  tax-deductible donations for atty. fees to BANCO, 1940 Union St., Benton Harbor,  MI 49022 (desperately needed)  For  any donation of $20 or more to help cover legal expenses Rev. Pinkney will send  you a Benton Harbor Most Wanted t-shirt.  Make checks to BANCO (above).  Call/email Rev. Edward Pinkney with ANY  questions, anytime! 1-269-925-0001 banco9342@sbcglobal.net
