BRING BROOMS, MOPS AND BUCKETS!
Emeryville is a tiny town next to Oakland. In November of last year, its 7,000 residents passed a local living wage measure. Woodfin Suites Hotel in Emeryville refuses to comply with the measure. They have attempted to squash any efforts by their workers - mostly immigrant women of color facing low wages, huge work quotas, and a lack of job security - to urge compliance.
On Wednesday, managers gave them 24 hours to re-submit work authorization documents, and told them that anyone who refused or who was suspected of being undocumented would be fired. Employers are required to check these documents only for new hires; there is no reason to suddenly demand them from workers who have been there for years. This is an obvious and illegal attempt to use immigration status to punish workers for speaking out.
Please call Woodfin manager Mary Beth Smith at (510) 601-5880. Tell her not to retaliate against the workers for standing up for their rights. Demand that the Woodfin stop asking workers for work authorization papers. For more information, contact Sarah at (510) 435-9475.
